Day 41: No More Bull

My husband and I have a standing deal.  Next time we can't decide where to eat, we're going to Beefy King. 

A historic landmark for 42 years, we've passed the place a million times.  Still, every time we see the cute and kitschy bull, I have no desire to pull over.  Perhaps it's the notion of grease, the work trucks outside, or the fact that I am just not a big fan of sandwiches, but seeing the old deco building doesn't speak to me (When it comes to unhealthy food, I tend to lean towards diners). 

Still, today was the big day. After seven years of marriage, the wait was finally over.  The verdict?  If you like roast beef and tater tots, it's probably a pretty good option.  But, if you are looking for clean, healthy food, you're better off to drive in another direction.

Day 38: Reevaluating Problems

If you've got something to complain about, don't do it to my husband.  I learned this lesson early on in our marriage when I came to him with a personal dilemma.

I don't remember the exact situation, but the conversation went something like this.

Me: I can't believe they got the order wrong. I already waited more than 20 minutes.  They knew I wanted "x" and they gave me "y."  Now I've got to go back to the store.
Him: Hmmm...well that's a first world problem.

The inference?  Whatever you are complaining about right now isn't nearly as terrible as people dying in the streets, war, or starvation.  So, really, could you stop it already?

Funny thing is, my husband has never lived in a third world country.  He is also no angel when it comes to complaining (just try to keep him from a hot shower or comfy bed).  Still, he has a point about not sweating the small stuff.

Today, as my girlfriend and I argued about her purchasing a needed pair of eyeglasses, we were suddenly brought to a halt by a sad scene in the street.  A small dog lay lifeless in the center lane.  The owner (or who I assume to be the owner) wailed and shook as she scooped the dog up and placed him in her car.

For a moment, we just sat silent.  It was awful and a great reminder of what's really important.  Life is short.  Stop worrying. Live.

PS As an additional awful reminder, my heart goes out to all of the victims of the Arizona shooting today.  May your family and your community find love, peace, and healing.

Day 24: Pie Pressure

My mother makes the best apple pie on the planet.  That's not smack. That's real, honest-to-goodness my mother can beat your mother in a baking showdown...anytime...anywhere. 

The crust is light and delicious.  The pie overflowing with apple sweet sugary goodness.

I live for that pie.  And, my body shows it. That's why this year, instead of eating my normal slice (or two or three) AND bringing home extra for later, I did the unthinkable.  I took a bite--ONE bite--and gave the rest to my delightfully skinny husband.

Mom, not one for breaking tradition, didn't adjust well to the alteration. 

Mom:  "Are you sure you don't want a small piece of pie?"
Me:  "I would love it, but I'm really trying to watch what I eat."
Mom:  "How 'bout I give you some to take home so you can have a bite later?"
Me:  "It's really better that I don't keep that stuff in the house."
Mom:  "It sure is good.  How about just a little bit?"
Me:  "Mom, I love you and I love the pie, but could you please stop asking me?  I really haven't been feeling well and I am trying to take care of my health."
Mom:  "How about I wrap some up for you and you take it home for Angel (my hubby)?"
Me (sighing):  "No thanks, Mom.  Angel doesn't really want to have it in the house either."
Mom:  "MMMM. Ok.  Well, how about some cookies?"

LOL.  I guess in some things are easier to alter than others.  Merry Christmas and pass the tangerines.
